| | | | Search Engine Position is Everything (almost)
[Part 1] | | It's amazing how little attention is paid to search engine positions. While some online sellers are willing to spend thousands of dollars per month for Google adwords campaigns, they don't consider that if they spent a fraction of those dollars optimizing their websites, the return on investment would be enormous. Adword fees would be reduced, and traffic increased.
Where do you start?
First you need to know where your website "lives" in the search engines. This may sound like a simple proposition, however it can be very time consuming.
Here's the method I use:
1. Analyze your web statistics and see what phrases people are using to find your site. Make a list.
2. What phrases aren't on the list that should be? Think like the consumer, use natural language.
3. Use Google's keyword tool to analyze your list. The tool will give you information on how many searches per month there are for each phrase. You can find the tool here: Google Keyword Tool
4. Make a determination as to which phrases you want to target.
5. Use a search engine position monitoring tool to track your positions fro each phrase. I recommend the PosiTracker Search Engine Monitoring Tool. This is a great service. Not only does it scan up to 1000 positions deep in the top 4 search engines, but it draws beautiful graphs, tracks cache dates, and allows you to make notes on the timeline (very important).
6. Let the monitoring tool track your positions for about a week. This will establish a baseline before you begin your SEO work.
